Grissom enter ALFA trainer and straps in; Grissom operates controls as trainer maneuvers. Grissom dons under garmet and spacesuit, boots, helmet and gloves. Grissom, in flight suit, leaves buildings, walks to F-106 jet, inspects and ingresses cockpit. Grissom in spacesuit and helmet enters water tank and ingresses capsule; capsule floating in water as Grissom emerges from top, lowers life raft into water and tries to exit into raft. Astronauts Alan Shepard and Walter Schirra talks to Grissom in spacesuit on barge; Grissom ingresses capsule and capsule is lowered into water. Rear Admiral Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. (November 18, 1923 – July 21, 1998) was an American astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot, and businessman. In 1961, he became the first American to travel into space, and in 1971, he walked on the Moon. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Shepard saw action with the surface navy during World War II. He became a naval aviator in 1946, and a test pilot in 1950.
